Actually, I am about move from full service restoration to the dark side. Yes, I am becoming a Cat adjuster. I am trying to find out if there's any advice out there about which laptops people recommend or do not recommend.

Hello, GAfixer:

Before I ask why you want to go from restoration to CAT Adjuster, let me reply to your question:

1) Toshiba, Fujitsu, IBM Thinkpad (older casing) or Thinkpad by Lenovo.

Toshiba
I used Toshiba for years...good workhorse...great 24/7 support.....ask about overnight service to you. Satellite is their base model....other models have more bells/whistles.

Fujitsu
For two years, I tried Fujitsue Tablet PC (9x12). Allowed me to sketch in field...........if disciplined, can use all the time and be paperless.

They also have good selection of laptops, tech support and ask about immediate service.

IBM Thinkpad and Lenovo Thinkpad
Last year, switched to older case for IBM Thinkpad T60......has metal casing on top for protection.....sealed layer under keyboard to protect from liquids..........thin and good workhorse..........I got a completely refurnished unit for $500.

Go to their site, www.lenovo.com....click on left column...laptops and netbooks....see 3 series of laptops......choose IBM Thinkpad.........buy the next day service and replacment...................

So, now I would choose Thinkpad-Toshiba-Fujitsu.

2) I am curious why you are leaving restoration and going to CAT adjuster. Have you done your homework? Adjusting can be a feast or famine job. Fortunately, I had years of experience as a restorer before, also, becoming an independent adjuster. I guess that I was just in the "right place at the right time" for working CATS. In addition, those, that are new to the field don't make the big bucks.

When I wasn't adjusting, I was going back to restoration. I quit adjusting after 2008 because I got tired of watching so many bad faith claims develop with the carriers. A lot of carriers will tell you that we don't want you adjusting, we just want you to prepare a scope and take photos......carriers have gotten tighter on their pay scales....they increase the work load of your assignment and limit your mileage fees.

So, now I get involved with consultanting and helping other restorers and regular contractors, who "run into roadblocks" with estimate preparation and insurance claims.

The key is to do your homework and make sure that you work for the right adjusting firm, that has a good reputation of paying before they get paid. In addition, see who their clients are.

I believe "going to the Dark Side" refers to going from the Independent side to the PA side.
